Patrick Henry lived in a time of revolutionary new social and political ideas. It was a time in which he spoke out for the independence of the individual. He defended individual rights to the point of opposing the new United States Constitution because it did not specify the rights of the people.
He believed deeply in his rights
"I know not what course others may take, but as for me, Give me Liberty or Give me Death"
came from his lips on March 23, 1775.Patrick Henry's words have as much meaning today as they did in the late 1700's. He spoke out for individual liberty whether it was under the British government or the new United States Of America. To Patrick Henry, the United States Constitution was a contract between "We the People" and its new government; the Constitution assigned certain obligations to the Federal government with all other obligations and rights being retained by the States and the People. As a contract, the Constitution must be followed by both parties...both the People and the Government.
